ABOUT RANGE COLLECTIVE

RANGE presents a group of eleven artists situated around Aotearoa (and the UK) drawn together by a shared interest in analogue photographic processes. These diverse works confess a mutual yearning for deeper engagement with place and material, realized, over time, by working in collaboration with place and material.

Each artist is grounded in practice: they gather plant materials and make work from the chemistry of their decomposition. They record the sound of plants growing. They make exposures in the wind. They collect sediment and expose expired sheet film. They make photograms and bio-negatives in the colour darkroom. They mix plant developer from the same trees they photograph. They shoot tender moments and worry about death. They walk coastal routes and listen to the landscape. They make tessellations. They fix their work or leave it subject to change. 

Using various photographic and camera-less processes, unpredictable chemistry and expired materials, the artists have developed earth-toned impressions and chemical collaborations  that trace the movement of plants and humans across oceans and borders, the motion of limbs, of water and sediment, of wind carved into rock. These works are evidence of transgressions, decay, and change, set down in black and white, and in striking colour, in the near-Grecian blue and white of the cyanotype, and in the blurred pastel tones of the unfixed lumen.
